KYOTO–Remarkable tatami mat mosaics are on display at the city’s Komyoin temple.
These tatami are not like the mats found in Japanese homes. They are more like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
One of the images is of a crane’s head with the wings swept around it. In total, 301 small tatami mats were laid out to produce the floor image. The crane appears to be reaching out for a drink of water from the dry landscape garden adjacent to the room where the image is on display. The crane is a symbol found in the crest of the temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto.
The art is the work of Kenzi Yamada, 39, a tatami artist from Hashima, Gifu Prefecture. Yamada notes that the tatami pieces are all the same color.“I tried to express differences in color by slightly changing the angle of the mat’s stitching,” he said. “Sunlight changes the color of the tatami to make it appear white or green. In the early evening a gold color also appears, depending on the angle.”
The special art can be viewed until July 30.
